Ferguson confirms: Manchester Utd. doesn't want Ballack anymore

Man. Utd. coach Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed his club would not be pursuing their long-standing interest in the Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Ballack in the January transfer window, opting instead to concentrate upon unearthing a direct replacement for the departed Roy Keane.

Ferguson confirmed that this team had held preliminary and informal negotiations with the German national team captain but had withdrawn from the bidding for a player whose contract expires at the end of the season.

"We considered Michael Ballack quite a lot in the last few months. We knew his contract was up and we spoke to his people," Ferguson said.

"He is a terrific player but he does play mainly in the areas we play Wayne Rooney. I think, therefore, we are going to target players we actually need badly.

"You can't include Roy Keane in the equation. Where Ballack plays is nowhere near Roy Keane. The priority was always to replace Roy Keane. We've been talking about it for two or three years but the difficulty is getting one."

Ballack, 29, is now widely expected to sign a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid in January while Ferguson concentrates on other targets, said to include AC Milan's Reno Gattuso, Deportivo la Coruna's Aldo Duscher and Didier Zokora, of St Etienne, although the manager concedes that may prove problematic.
