Sad debut for Ballack

Share |

Chelsea is on America in order to have some pre-season games. And they lost 1-0 to a Major League Soccer Allstars side in Chicago on Saturday.

It was a expected debut for new signings Michael Ballack of Germany and Ukraine's Andriy Shevchenko. However, it was one of the London club's established stars, Frank Lampard, who nearly put them ahead in the first half with a curling freekick which was well saved by goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

We must remember that defender Chris Albright had a great chance to put the hosts into the lead when he outpaced defender Wayne Bridge but put his left foot shot wide of Carlo Cudicini's goal.

And in the second half only alert defending by Eddie Robinson kept the Allstars in the game, sprinting back to clear after Facundo Erpen managed to knock the ball through his own goalkeeper's legs towards the only goal.

In the end, MLS coach Peter Nowak brought on young star Freddy Adu, rumoured to be a transfer target for both Chelsea and rivals Manchester United, but it was Dwayne Rosario who got the winner, controlling neatly before whipping a fierce shot past substitute goalkeeper Henrique Hilario to delight most of the 21,000 fans in the stadium.
